Tony Schumacher, the driver of the Leatherwood Distillery Top Fuel Dragster, is set to make his highly anticipated return to Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) for the NHRA Brainerd Nationals. Schumacher, a three-time event champion at Brainerd (2000, 2004, 2008), is looking to add to his already impressive legacy at the iconic venue.
Schumacher’s record at Brainerd speaks for itself: four-time runner-up (2003, 2006, 2011, 2022), and a six-time No. 1 qualifier (2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012). His six No. 1 qualifiers at BIR are the most by any driver in the Top Fuel class.
Reflecting on his recent performances, including a 10th-place qualification and a first-round exit at both the 2023 NHRA Brainerd Nationals and the most recent event in Sonoma, Schumacher remains optimistic. He acknowledges the team’s early exits but is confident in their improved performance following a successful test session after Sonoma.
“Looking forward to the nicer weather that awaits us this weekend and getting back to Brainerd where we always have a lot of fun. The fans in the Zoo are like no other, and we love how pumped they get for the race every year,” said Schumacher. “We’ve had a few early exits lately, but our performance continues to improve. We tested after Sonoma, and those runs were exactly what we needed to get back on track. A lot to look forward to this weekend including Ida’s debut. I’m happy and excited for her to compete on the NHRA circuit for the first time.”
As the 2024 NHRA season progresses, Schumacher’s current statistics include 12 races, one national event win, two runner-up finishes, and one Mission #2Fast2Tasty victory. His career statistics are equally remarkable, with 567 races under his belt, 87 wins, and 88 No. 1 qualifiers.
Schumacher’s return to Brainerd is not just about the race; it’s about reconnecting with the fans and embracing the unique atmosphere that only BIR can provide. With a renewed focus and determination, Schumacher is ready to make a strong push for another victory at one of his favorite tracks.
