New Sonnax Upgrade Protects Against One of The TH400, 4L80-E Most Catastrophic Failure Points

Sonnax Transmission Company has announced the release of its new heavy duty low roller clutch assembly, an innovative transmission upgrade to address one of the most destructive failure points in GM TH400, 4L80-E and 4L85-E transmissions: the direct drum. Designed for high-horsepower racing, towing and heavy-duty performance vehicles, the patent-pending assembly delivers enhanced durability and reliability where it matters most.

In high-torque environments, OE-style low roller clutch assemblies can experience roller “pop-out” events that crush or flatten the clutch’s accordion springs. Once damaged, the springs are no longer able to maintain proper roller engagement. This eventually leads to roller clutch failure, which can allow the drum to overspeed in excess of 15,000 rpm. These conditions put the drum at risk for an explosion that can destroy the transmission and injure the driver.

“This is a problem that has plagued the 400 for decades,” said Gregg Nader, Sonnax high performance product line manager. “And even if you have an SFI case and aluminum drum to reduce the chance of an explosion, if you overspeed the direct drum, it can still burn your clutches.”

To combat this risk, Sonnax engineers developed a heavy-duty, billet aluminum assembly with a unique design that prevents damage to the accordion springs during pop-out events. This allows the clutch to function reliably and hold up even under extreme loads.

Key Features

  • Prevents catastrophic direct drum failure
  • Heavy-duty design and billet aluminum protects accordion springs from damage during roller pop-out
  • Recommended for any vehicle and a key upgrade for units where the low roller clutch is subjected to extreme stress

Sonnax heavy duty low roller clutch assembly (part number 34654HD-01K) is compatible with OE and aftermarket reaction carriers that use a conventional TH400 roller clutch. It is available now through authorized distributors. Learn more about this and other Sonnax performance transmission upgrades at www.sonnax.com.
