Ron Capps, driver of the NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra, is eager to add another victory to his impressive resume at this weekend’s NHRA Arizona Nationals held at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. A three-time event winner (2003, 2009, 2013) and five-time runner-up (1998, 2000, 2005, 2017, 2023), Capps brings considerable experience and momentum into this year’s event.
Capps enters the weekend fresh off a strong runner-up finish at the NHRA Mission Foods Series season opener in Gainesville, Florida. That performance marked his second consecutive final-round appearance, following his victory at the prestigious PRO Superstar Shootout preseason event in February.
“Having a great start to the 2025 season at the Gatornationals is great for anybody on a team,” Capps said, “And, you back up a little bit and look at the PRO Superstar Shootout race, and to get that win back in February and then go into Gainesville with a little more confidence than we had last year was big. To leave Gainesville after running great in our new Carlyle Tools livery and take it to the final round with a chance to win the race is always great. But, more than anything, it’s the confidence that the team has.
“It’s so nice to see Guido (crew chief Dean Antonelli) knowing he can go up there and predict what the car is going to run and push when we have to, but also when we don’t think we have to push as hard, to set it so our NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra just goes down the track, and that is how we won those championships together.”
Capps, who qualified third and raced to the final round at Gainesville, securing a spot in the first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Funny Car Challenge of the season, is eager to claim the inaugural #2Fast2Tasty trophy in Phoenix.
“I’m pretty pumped to head to Phoenix,” Capps continued. “We have two in a row and then a week break, then Vegas, and then back east. So, you can blink, and all of a sudden it has been three races, and you’ve either moved up in the points or dropped. Lots of cool stuff happening this weekend, and we’re going to see if we can steal the first #2Fast2Tasty trophy in Phoenix and get another Wally for the NAPA team.”
Adding to the weekend’s excitement, Ron’s brother, professional stunt driver and part-time drag racer Jon Capps, will compete alongside him in the Funny Car category.
