Randy Meyer Racing proved they were a force to be reckoned with during the $15,000-to-win Top Alcohol Dragster Shootout held at Cecil County Dragway this past weekend. With two hard-charging A/Fuel dragsters and a pair of standout legendary drivers in Megan Meyer and Gary Pritchett, the team delivered strong qualifying runs and exciting side-by-side action throughout the event.
Megan Meyer, making her return to quarter-mile competition for the first time in five years, qualified third with a stellar 5.19 at 277 mph in the GUNK-backed a/fuel dragster. Gary Pritchett secured the second qualifying spot with a career-best 5.15 at 275 mph supported by Hedinger’s Equipment and Hoopes Fire Prevention, setting the tone for a big weekend in front of his hometown crowd.
In the opening round, Megan squared off against Brandon Greco’s blown-alcohol dragster. Greco got to half-track first, but Megan’s reaction time advantage and top-end horsepower carried her to the stripe first with a 5.22-second run for the round win. Her weekend came to an early end in round two with a red-light start against Kelly Kundratic.
Pritchett advanced through the first two rounds on singles, but the competition ramped up in the semifinals when he lined up against Kundratic. Gary unleashed a blistering 5.17 at 275 mph to secure his spot in the final round.
There, he faced DJ Cox in a blown-alcohol machine owned by Tom Fox. After track prep before the final, Gary’s dragster lost traction early and popped the front wheels up during a pedal job, slowing to a 5.47 at 272 mph against Cox’s winning 5.30 at the same speed.
“We had a great time racing at our home track,” said Gary. “Cecil County Dragway is a fantastic facility, and it means so much to compete in front of our local fans and family. Facing off against some of the toughest cars on the East Coast, we consistently laid down strong passes. While the final round didn’t go our way, we are proud of the performance and momentum gained and Randy’s taking this finish as motivation to keep pushing. For Megan, the race was a personal milestone and a reminder of why she loves the sport.
“It was awesome to get back into competition and race against familiar faces and names,” said Meyer. “It’s been five years since I’ve done quarter-mile racing, and it felt great getting to smash on the pedal and keep it locked down. I truly believe we had the best dragsters on the property. This was my first time visiting Cecil County and I’m very impressed. I really hope they host this event again — because I’m definitely coming back for redemption.
“But I’m also majorly disappointed in myself for letting down my team and the lack of championship-contending driving that I’m used to delivering. This sport is way more mentally tough than physically tough, and if your mental state isn’t dialed into the zone, you will suffer—and I did. It’s not that easy getting back in the car after a year off of driving.”
While the final result wasn’t the win they were chasing, Randy Meyer Racing leaves Maryland with their heads high after a weekend of strong runs, career bests, and a renewed fire heading into the summer.
