J.R. Todd and the DHL Toyota team made the most of Friday night’s lone Funny Car session – and then some.
Blasting down the Pacific Raceways quarter-mile in 3.901 seconds at 329.26 mph, Todd snatched the provisional No. 1 spot at the Muckleshoot Casino Resort NHRA Northwest Nationals. He also took home the $4,000 Deecell Power Systems “After Dark Low Qualifier” bonus in the process.
It was one of only two three-second runs in the class, as many teams struggled under the lights. Todd didn’t – despite a handful of unexpected twists and turns in the run.
“From the time I hit the gas, a whole sequence of events happened,” Todd laughed. “It picked the front end up pretty good… I’m just steering the thing all over the place. I definitely did not expect it to make it, but it did.”
Should the number hold through Saturday, it’ll mark Todd’s first No. 1 of the season and the 15th of his career.
Chad Green (3.928) and Austin Prock (5.580) sit second and third, respectively, heading into Saturday’s three-session qualifying marathon.
