Walsh Wins Career-First NHRA Pro Mod Race

Wixom, Michigan’s Don Walsh raced to his career-first victory in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by ProCare Rx July 8, at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

Walsh the number-three qualifier, held off event top qualifier and Ohio native Troy Coughlin in the final round after defeating David Roemer, Mike Janis, and Kevin McCurdy in earlier rounds. In the final round at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, Walsh powered his 2011 Ford Mustang past Coughlin with a performance of 5.893 seconds at 251.95 mph. Walsh posted the second-quickest and fastest pass of the event to take the win.

Troy Coughlin

Coughlin, had the starting-line advantage, but slowed near mid-track when his twin-turboed ’68 Chevy Camaro with lost traction and finished with a performance of 11.771 at 92.65.

“We just tried to get after it a little bit too much. Between that and the race track starting to come down in temperature a skosh, we overdid it,” Coughlin admitted. “He’d been running .88, 89, and we’d been running .90, .91. Shoulda, woulda, coulda, but I agree with all the choices we made going into it. We made good runs, it just didn’t turn out our way this time.

With the victory, Walsh moves to fourth in the series points standing.

The NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by ProCare Rx continues Aug. 29 – Sept. 3 at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis with the 58th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
