Richmond County’s motorsports legacy continues to shine as Rockingham Dragway and Rockingham Speedway will receive $2 million in state grants for facility improvements.

The funding, reallocated through Senate Bill 382, was originally earmarked for a pedestrian bridge connecting the two tracks but has now been divided, with $1.7 million going to the dragway and $300,000 to the speedway.

This decision, championed by Rep. Ben Moss and Sen. Dave Craven, ensures the funds stay in the district, supporting much-needed upgrades. Moss highlighted the importance of these improvements in helping the tracks host larger events, saying, “We felt like it was a good call.”

Both tracks have seen significant state and local investment in recent years. The dragway, purchased by co-owners Dan VanHorn and Al Gennarelli in late 2022, has undergone repaving, bathroom upgrades, and tower renovations. The latest funding will be used to enhance the concrete grandstands and fencing, with work planned for the off-season. The speedway, which has steadily increased its event lineup since 2021, also benefits from community and state support, setting the stage for the return of NASCAR in April 2025.

Motorsports remains a driving force for tourism in Richmond County, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually. Rockingham Dragway hosted nearly 100,000 visits this year, with standout events like Street Outlaws in 2022 and the Epicenter Festival in 2019. Rockingham Speedway also broke attendance records in 2023 with events like the Hot Rod Power Tour and Tailgates N’ Tallboys festival.

“Motorsports has long been the engine powering tourism in Richmond County, establishing a legacy that continues to thrive today,” said Tourism Director Meghann Lambeth, according to The Richmond Observer. “The enduring relationship between tourism and motorsports is undeniable, making Richmond County a true motorsports destination.

“Whether it’s straight-line racing at Rockingham Dragway, roaring stock cars on the iconic oval at Rockingham Speedway, or dirt flying at Windy Hill MX in Ellerbe, Richmond County is Rockin’!”

The latest funding and continued improvements reinforce Richmond County’s position as a premier motorsports destination, ensuring its iconic tracks remain vibrant hubs for racers and fans alike.
