The stakes couldn’t have been higher last weekend as no-time racers from around the country converged on Xtreme Raceway Park outside Dallas, Texas, for the famed Bear Shit Only Invitational Shootout. With over $100,000 on the line, it was a who’s-who of top-flight grudge and small-tire racers. Fresh off a big win at Lights Out, Rob “The Gangster” Valden entered the event brimming with confidence—but ultimately ended the weekend with both a bittersweet exit and plenty of perspective.
“We knew we had a car that could win,” Valden shared on social media. “But we also knew it would be filled with exactly what it was: bears.”
Valden’s testing efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday yielded solid progress, and the team felt comfortable with their data as they rolled into eliminations. After snagging a first-round win on Friday evening, Valden drew his own teammate—and good friend—Manny Buginga for Round 2 on Saturday. The matchup was a heartbreaker: Valden spun the tires at the hit, while Buginga advanced.
“It was a blow to both of us because we both had really good hot rods, but that’s part of racing,” Valden said. “We made the calls we figured were needed to win. Unfortunately, we spun, and Manny went on to win the round.”
Buginga and Russell Stone later fought their way into the finals, illustrating just how tough the field was. Despite the early exit, Valden showed no signs of discouragement, highlighting his family’s presence and giving high praise to his supportive crew.
“Even though we didn’t win, having my wife, kids, and my dad there made it one of the best races. My crew—Kyle Pettis, Alan Rodriguez, Chad Revia, Shawn Sladek, and others—are my dawgs. They give me a safe, prepared car every pass. We’ll be back in the winners circle soon.”
Valden’s social post also tipped a cap to Buginga: “Manny, thanks for everything you do for me, too.” The blend of friendly rivalry and fierce competition is exactly what has made Big Jake’s races a can’t-miss happening for fans of no-time and small-tire racing.
Valden, Buginga, and the whole Bear Shit Only Invitational crowd proved once again that when six-figure paydays and bragging rights are on the line, these racers push their machines—and each other—to the limit. Even without the big check in hand, Valden left Dallas more motivated than ever.
“I have nothing to hang my head over,” he emphasized. “We were one of the quickest cars on the property, and we’ll work harder. We knew exactly what we were up against—Bears—and we can’t wait for another shot.”
