Nasty Racing Acquires Historic Darlington Dragway, Promises Major Upgrades and New Era of Growth

In a bold move that underscores its rapid rise in the sport of drag racing, Nasty Racing has officially acquired Darlington Dragway, one of the most iconic and historic eighth-mile tracks in the Southeast. The acquisition was finalized on July 21, following negotiations with the private equity firm that previously controlled the lease of the facility.

Long operated under third-party management, the legendary drag strip had recently been the subject of speculation and confusion in the racing community. With this new chapter, Nasty Racing, led by Pro Mod racer and entrepreneur John Dougherty, aims to restore and elevate Darlington Dragway to its former glory – and beyond.

“Honestly, I don’t even know where to start,” said Dougherty. “My real journey in drag racing began when I moved to North Carolina and worked the starting line at GALOT Motorsports Park when it first opened. To now be involved with a legendary facility like Darlington Dragway – it doesn’t even feel real. It’s crazy how life comes full circle.”

“This opportunity is the result of years of hard work from so many people behind the scenes at Nasty Racing. I’m incredibly proud of our team and everything we’ve built. We’re full of energy, hungry for success, and ready to pour that same energy into this facility and the South Carolina drag racing community. Whether it’s Pro Mod, small tire, bracket racing, or even backside no prep – we want it all. If it’s drag racing, we want the action.”

A Historic Track with Deep Roots

Opened in 1976, Darlington Dragway has spent nearly 50 years as a cornerstone of grassroots and professional drag racing in the region. Located just outside Darlington in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, the track has hosted everything from big-money grudge races to national events under the IHRA banner, and more recently became a sanctioned NHRA member track earlier this year.

The dragway’s reputation for side-by-side racing, community engagement, and Southern hospitality has drawn racers from across the country for decades. Its long-standing presence has also contributed significantly to local tourism and the broader motorsports economy in South Carolina.

Big Plans for the Future

Under the direction of Nasty Racing, Darlington Dragway will undergo a comprehensive series of upgrades and improvements designed to enhance both racer and spectator experience. Renovations will include infrastructure updates, facility beautification, and added amenities – all part of a long-term plan to reestablish Darlington as one of the premier destinations for drag racing in the Southeast.

The new ownership has already signaled its intention to host a diverse schedule of events, including:

  • Pro Mod shootouts
  • Small tire & no prep races
  • Bracket series & big money races
  • Grudge events
  • NHRA Summit Racing Series and Jr. Dragster events

With the 2025 season already serving as Nasty Racing’s Pro Mod debut – and a strong one at that, featuring multiple semifinal appearances with two different cars – the momentum is undeniable.

“We’re excited to support the local community, bring racers back through the gates, and give fans a show they’ll never forget,” said Dougherty. “Darlington is back, and we’re just getting started.”
