J.R. Todd, DHL Team Building Consistency, Eyeing Breakthrough at Sonoma

The signs are there. A string of consistent passes. A career-best E.T. on race day. Strong qualifying performances. For J.R. Todd and the DHL Toyota GR Supra team, the pieces are coming together – and as the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series rolls into Wine Country, they’re ready to take the next step.

After qualifying No. 3 and posting his quickest run of the season during eliminations in Seattle, Todd believes the momentum is real – and Sonoma could be where it all clicks.

“We made some really good runs in Seattle, so we’re hoping to carry that into Sonoma,” said Todd. “It’s probably my favorite track on tour, and we’ve had success there before. It’d be a great place to pick up another win.”

Todd was the provisional No. 1 qualifier on Friday night in Seattle and held the top spot until the very last pair in the final session. He ultimately qualified third, then made a season-best 3.888-second pass in round one before bowing out in the second. But what stood out wasn’t just speed – it was consistency. The DHL team made six solid runs across the weekend.

“It’s all about consistency,” said crew chief Dickie Venables. “That’s what it takes to win. We don’t have that yet – but we’re making headway. J.R. does a great job behind the wheel. He’s smooth, he’s steady, and he’s a champ for a reason. It’s a pleasure to work with him.”

That chemistry will be crucial down the stretch. With just three races remaining before the Countdown to the Championship begins, every round counts. Sonoma marks a critical point in the calendar – a chance to build, climb, and gain ground on the top teams.

“This is the time of year to start making moves,” said Todd. “I’ve talked a lot about going to the later rounds and gaining on the guys in front of us. We need to make it happen now. Funny Car is so tough – you can’t take anything for granted. You’ve just got to keep digging.”

Todd has enjoyed past success at Sonoma Raceway, including a win just two years ago. The DHL team’s upward trajectory combined with a track where he’s comfortable could make for a dangerous combo.

“We’re not quite there yet,” said Venables. “But we’re pleased with the progress. If we keep making A to B runs, the wins will come.”
