The only father and son team in the NHRA nitro-burning Funny Car division, Chad and Hunter Green of Midland, Texas, bring their 12,000-horsepower drag racing machines to Thunder Valley Dragway this weekend (June 6-8) for the 24th annual SuperGrip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.
The Bristol event will be Hunter Green’s third as a Funny Car racer after impressive runs at Las Vegas and Charlotte earlier this year, and his father Chad has already reached the winner’s circle in the 2025 season opener at Gainesville, Florida, in his Bond-Coat Ford Mustang car.

Driving in the most powerful vehicles in all of motorsports, the Greens come to Bristol with their eyes on the winning prize after teammate Blake Alexander drove to a strong performance last weekend at Epping, NH, by qualifying fourth in the 16-driver Funny Car field in the Pronto Auto Services Dodge Hellcat. Hunter takes over the driving chores this weekend in the second Chad Green Motorsports entry.
The second-generation driver made a sensational debut at Las Vegas in April by qualifying sixth and then recorded the lowest elapsed time (ET) of the first round at the Charlotte NHRA event.
Now, Hunter is primed for this weekend’s Thunder Valley Dragway after Alexander’s showing last weekend in the team’s second Funny Car.
“Everything was new with the new car at the start of the season,” said the younger Green, the 2024 U.S. Nationals Top Alcohol Dragster champion. “We had a new chassis, new parts, and a new team, so it definitely took a while for everything to gel. But Blake’s runs last weekend proved that the new car is capable of a strong performance at Bristol. I know that my dad’s car has already won this year. We both feel confident entering the first qualifying rounds at Bristol.”

The elder Green is optimistic entering the Thunder Valley Dragway contest with the two Bond-Coat Funny Cars after 3.80s in qualifying and eliminations at Charlotte, Chicago and Epping.
“We had a couple of missteps at races we had strong cars, but we have shown that our cars can run with the contenders,” said Chad Green. “I’m very excited to have Hunter back in the Funny Car class this weekend. We felt he was ready to jump into a nitro Funny Car in 2025. And, in his first Funny Car race in Las Vegas, he qualified sixth, and he has handled the car very well at his first two races. This is only his third NHRA national event in a Funny Car, but, after Blake’s runs last weekend, we feel we can race well with our cars and be in the fight to return to victory lane.”
Nitro action at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals begins with qualifying runs set for Friday, June 6, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. EDT, followed by Saturday’s qualifications at 1:05 p.m. and 3:35 p.m. EDT. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, June 8, at 12 p.m. EDT.
The Super Grip NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals will be televised on Fox Sports 1 this Sunday at 3 p.m. EDT.
