Doug Kalitta didn’t need a single run down the racetrack to cement his legacy. On a cold, storm-hammered Saturday at Pomona, the NHRA announced that all professional qualifying for the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals was canceled due to weather. With the ladders locked in by points, Kalitta’s lead became mathematically unreachable — officially making him the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series Top Fuel world champion.
From Sprint Cars to 340-MPH Dragsters
Long before Kalitta ever strapped into a Top Fuel dragster, he was a force in open-wheel racing:
- 1991 USAC Midget Rookie of the Year
- 1994 USAC Sprint Car National Champion
- 21 total USAC national victories (14 midget, 7 sprint)
That championship-level sprint car background helped shape the calm, razor-precise driving style that has defined his NHRA career.
A Second Top Fuel Crown

Kalitta’s second title in three seasons caps a remarkable perseverance story. He spent years knocking on the championship door — finishing runner-up six times — before finally kicking it open in 2023 with that winner-take-all final-round triumph at Pomona.
That first championship came in dramatic fashion. This one came through a season of control, consistency, and clutch execution. No theatrics. No last-minute plot twist. Just a veteran driver who did the work all year long.
At 61 years old, the Ypsilanti, Michigan, native now owns Top Fuel crowns from 2023 and 2025 and remains one of the winningest Top Fuel racers in NHRA history.
The Year Kalitta Wouldn’t Let Go
This championship was earned long before the rain clouds hit California.
The Mac Tools team, led by iconic tuner Alan Johnson, hit their stride mid-summer. A string of quick qualifying runs and big Sunday performances set the tone, and when the Countdown began, Kalitta struck immediately, racing to a runner-up finish after a harrowing top-end crash in the semifinals, to take over the points lead.
He never surrendered it.
A strong Charlotte showing and back-to-back victories in St. Louis and Dallas built a points advantage big enough to withstand anything — even a washed-out Pomona weekend.
Alan Johnson’s 14th Top Fuel Title

Already viewed by many as the greatest nitro crew chief in drag racing history, Johnson has now been part of 14 Top Fuel world championships across the last 28 years — an unmatched record of consistency, power, and championship-caliber decision making.
Johnson’s power and precision, paired with Kalitta’s experience and discipline, has become one of NHRA’s most formidable and dependable combinations.
A Milestone for Kalitta Motorsports

This title adds to the legacy of one of drag racing’s most respected organizations.
Kalitta Motorsports now owns:
- 4 Top Fuel titles (Doug Kalitta 2023, 2025; Scott Kalitta 1994, 1995)
- 2 Funny Car titles (Del Worsham 2015, J.R. Todd 2018)
For team owner Connie Kalitta — a Hall of Famer and pioneer of the sport — watching his nephew win again at the sport’s biggest event marks another highlight in a family story that stretches from USAC dirt to the NHRA’s biggest stage.
Legacy Stuff

This second title rewrites Doug Kalitta’s place in the sport. He’s now a multi-time Top Fuel world champion, joining elite company in one of the most competitive eras the class has ever seen.
From sprint cars to dragsters, from near-misses to multiple championships, Kalitta’s path is a story of grit, longevity, and undeniable skill.
And now, the big moment is official: Doug Kalitta is once again the NHRA Top Fuel world champion — and he earned it every step of the way.
